Writing Effective Learning Objectives: The Key to Showing the Value of Training

What’s in it for me?   This seems to be the top question of decision makers in business today.  Let’s face it…companies want and demand results.  Money is tight and companies want to get the biggest bang for their buck.  When the training department is out there competing with all the other departments for budget dollars, we have to demonstrate the value and return on investment our training programs bring to the organization.

For training departments to exhibit value to the organization they must create training material that is in line with organizational goals and objectives; produce programs that bring about desired change; and, through evaluation show that training objectives have been met in measureable terms.  Writing effective learning objectives allows all three of these things to happen, setting the stage for training programs that achieve positive bottom-line results.

Dr. Chris Woodard has been in the training and development field since 1998. His current role is managing the Training and Quality Assurance group at American Electric Power where he has been employed for over 30 years. Chris has a doctorate in Occupational and Adult Education with Oklahoma State University.  He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Oklahoma Wesleyan University and the University of Oklahoma. Chris has been on the NE Oklahoma Chapter of ASTD board for several years now and has held several roles.
