The ATD Certification Institute (ATD CI) is an independent organization created by ATD to take the lead and set industry standards for the talent development profession. ATD CI offers to credentials based upon the ATD Competency Model, the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) and the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP).

The Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) is a certification for talent development professionals who are in the early part of their careers or whose professional roles and aspirations are focused on a few areas of expertise. The competencies included in the APTD are the basics of talent development that professionals can use every day, no matter the level within an organization or company. What is the CPLP certification?

CPLP is a credential for learning and performance professionals offered by the ATD Certification Institute.  It is broad-based and addresses ten areas of expertise as defined by the ATD Competency Model.

Who can apply for the CPLP?

Professionals in the learning and performance field who have a minimum of three years related work experience may apply, though five or more is preferable. Use the CPLP Interactive Guide to help you decide.

What does the CPLP cover?

The CPLP competency testing process requires candidates to pass both a knowledge exam and a skills application exam. The knowledge exam has 150 multiple choice questions covering ten areas, and is taken online. The skills application exam is based on a case study, and is also taken online.

How much studying/preparation is required?

Study times vary by individual. Most candidates spend a minimum of 80+ hours to prepare for the knowledge exam and another 30+ hours to prepare for the skills application exam.
